Fun with iChat and AIM

So I spent my morning trying to get AIM and iChat to play with each other after mysteriously developing connection problems yesterday. All of a sudden my lovely lady started getting an error message from iChat when she tried to login to AIM saying something like “You have connected too quickly since your last login. Please Try again later.”

Trying again later and this morning didn’t work. Initially my aim account worked but I started getting the same error this morning. After looking online at apple’s forums and some other sites I came upon a solution that worked and a probable cause for the problem.

It seems iChat breaks when AOL’s servers send it bad info and it freaks out and tries to login a bunch of times in a row. After that you can’t login to aim for a couple of hours and you have to fix iChat before it will stop sending multiple logins to aol every time you try and start the aim client.To fix iChat you have to follow these steps

Quit iChat
Open the Activity monitor which is located in the Applications/Utilities folder.
Find and force quit the iChatAgent process.
Now go to user folder/Library/Preferences
Delete the following files com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist, and com.apple.iChat.plist
Re-start the system
Open iChat and setup AIM accounts.
In the server settings tab, shut off ssl and change the port to 443
Login to AIM

Opening Day!

It was really nice to start the day (and baseball season) off right and see the sox win 6-5 in 10 innings. It was a good close game. I could get used to morning games from Japan.

The Most Amazing Woman In The World

Let me take you back about a week, my big blue four year old dell XPS monster computer gave up the ghost and joined the choir invisible. It was a trusty computer, if showing its age but it still edited videos, played games, and recorded TV for me. After a few weeks of random BSoDs it just wouldn’t boot, even froze with a bartPE disk and it was obvious that a major piece of hardware had stopped working, and given it’s age replacing parts to find out what was wrong really wasn’t worth it. Given my current finances I couldn’t afford to replace it right away, and borrowed a laptop from work to fill in the hole until probably the fall. Well lets just say that the laptop was not the best performer in the world. My Lovely Lady used it for a few days, installed the sims, and was less than impressed.

So my amazing wonderful girlfriend completely floored me last night. She knew I wanted a Mac, but she didn’t really like them she has always been a PC person, but she went with a friend last night and went to the Apple store. She started texting me while I was at work asking me questions about Macs and finally asked “Hmm … So you really want a mac?” so I immeditaly called her, and she stated her intention to buy one, asked me a bunch of questions, I tried to talk her out of it, but she wanted a new computer and she wanted to see me smile (as if she isn’t reason enough) so finally we decided I would meet her at the mall and we would look at them together. I still couldn’t believe that she was doing this, and convinced my self that by the time I got to the mall she would have changed her mind.

Well no she didn’t and we head to the Apple store and she proceeds to buy a 24″ iMac. I am just floored. This amazing woman, does this just to see me smile, just to see me geek out, just because she knows I will love it, because she loves me. She did this for me and I can’t tell you how amazing this feels, she really is the most amazing person in the world. I have tried to put this feeling into words, but they just don’t do it justice. I love her with all my heart, she is everything to me.
